So Your Interested in Becoming more involved in the Grass Roots Political

Process by becoming a Precinct Committee Person (PCP) in your area.

Information site for Election Calendar -- http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/voterresources.html

Important Dates to Remember: PCP Application acceptance starts February 1st d & Ends March 11, 2008

February 1st              Applications acceptance starts for registering as a PCP Person in your area

March 11th                Candidate (PCP) Application Acceptance Ends

April 29th                  Voter registration deadline for May 20th Primary Election

“Must be post marked 21 days prior to Primary Election”

April 23rd-25th          Voters' pamphlet delivery

May 2nd – 6th           Ballots mailed for May 16th Primary Election

May 20th                 ELECTION DAY: statewide primary election

Becoming a Precinct Committee Person

In order to qualify as a Precinct Committee Person / Candidate, you must:

·        Be a member of the Democratic or Republican Party; currently other parties do not have PCP’s.

·        Have been a member of the party you wish to represent 180 days prior to election (since the previous September);

·        File in the precinct where you’re registered, or in an adjoining precinct (you can do this if you know your precinct has PCPs but a neighboring precinct doesn’t)

·        Fill out a standard “Filling of Candidacy for Precinct Committee Person” for Oregon form.

·        Once the form has been completed, submit either in person or by mail to your local County Elections Office.

Oregon’s election law authorizes one or more male and one or more female precinct committee persons for each major political party and for each precinct area depending on its size.  In other-words, for approx. every 500 registered voters in a precinct area, there should be at least one person of each gender to represent that precinct.

Each Precinct Person is a member of his or her County Central Committee for that party.  The County Central Committee is the highest authority in county party policies.  This body has the authority to adopt rules or resolutions covering any matter of party government within the county.  Additionally, this is the body that establishes the policies, articulates the beliefs and establishes the standards for local party candidates.  These basic policies, beliefs and standards are then passed on to the State and National party for action.

"The precinct is the smallest political unit in the country.  A precinct cannot be divided by legislative, congressional or supervisor district. A precinct is where elections are won or lost.  Most importantly, it is your neighborhood. You know the people, the schools and the community centers.  You have your hand on the pulse of the precinct; you understand the problems and potentials and have a desire to improve your neighborhood.

So, starting February 1st you can get an application from your local County Elections Office, but you “MUST” have it in no later than March 11th. You must also fill it out completely. Incomplete forms will be rejected.

DIDN’T MAKE IT ON THE MAY 20th  ELECTION BALLOT?

Don’t give up hope if you didn’t get the application in, and you don’t end up on the May 20th ballot. You can be a Write-In Candidate.  Write in your name on your ballot in the box for PCP in your area.  Then get at least two other people in the same party in your area to write your name in also, that way you can still get elected. You only need three votes! Make sure they all know how to spell your name correctly.

Information by PhoneYou can find your Local County Elections Office address / phone numbers by going to the Blue Edged Pages Government Section of your Local Phone Directory.  Under the County Section you should find Elections / Voter Registration and there phone number for information.

ON THE INTERNET:  Also, you can find all of the County Oregon Elections Offices on the Internet by going to the Oregon State Elections Division Website:  http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/elechp.htm

Motorcycle Riders Urge Support of Legislation
December 28, 2007

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation has declared its support of the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (HR 2694) and strongly urges Congress to pass the legislation in order to safeguard individual vehicle ownership rights.

US Nationwide - The legislative intent of the Right to Repair Act is to offer protections for motor-vehicle owners by making it illegal for vehicle manufacturers to withhold information necessary to diagnose, service or repair motor vehicles.

The fact is that consumers are entitled to the right to choose how their motor vehicle is maintained or upgraded. The point of Right to Repair is not to discourage vehicle owners from using the dealership for service, but to protect the freedom of American consumers to choose how they take care of their motor vehicle, be it in their driveway or at a trusted repair facility

We have formally committed to support the Right to Repair Act because we believe that safeguarding individual ownership rights is an absolute must. Access to accurate information when it comes to the repair or upkeep of a vehicle is essential to the safety and well being of the entire American motoring public.
We encourage all motorists to visit www.righttorepair.org to send a letter to each of their congressional representatives, urging them to support the Right to Repair Act by adding their names to the growing list of co-sponsors.

MRF CALL TO ACTION

For the past several weeks the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has been
actively working on a multi-tiered strategic initiative to counter the
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) program to pressure states
into enacting mandatory helmet laws.  We are prepared today to launch the
program beginning with a Call to Action to our State Motorcycle Rights
Organizations (SMROs).

The MRF's Call to Action is to encourage our SMRO partners to send their
top lobbying teams to Washington D.C. in late October and early November
to visit with their members of Congress to voice opposition to the NTSB's
lobbying efforts.  It is our position that the NTSB is proposing to
directly lobby the states with federal tax money based on poorly-drawn
conclusions, using a very narrow scope, and not employing the rigors of
research to which they normally hold themselves.  This is simply not
acceptable to the MRF and our SMRO partners.  A clear message was sent by
the Senate in the 109th Congress when they voted 69-28 to defeat the
Lautenberg Federal Helmet amendment, which would have pressured states
into passing mandatory helmet laws, based on the fact that this issue is
clearly a State's rights issue.  Accordingly, we will be asking members of
Congress to write a letter to the NTSB reminding them of this fact.

During these SMRO visits we will also be presenting a bullet point
statistical fact sheet developed in conjunction with the MRF Legislative,
Motorcycle Safety, and Statistics Committees that clearly shows that the
answer to motorcycle safety and reducing fatalities is, in fact, an
aggressive approach toward CRASH AVOIDANCE and NOT safer crashing.  In
addition, we will be educating members of Congress on the many points
contained in our Motorcycle Safety Action Plan, pointing out to them that
states with the highest reductions in motorcycle fatalities and states
with low fatality rates per registered motorcycle are not those with
mandatory helmet laws, but rather states that utilize the many tools in
the motorcycle safety action plan.  Additionally, we will thank many of
them for their belief in motorcycle safety shown by the creation of the
2010 motorcycle safety grants and the creation of the Motorcycle Advisory
Council in TEA-LU.  We will take advantage of this time to inform them as
to how these programs are being used effectively.

The second phase of the MRF's strategic initiative involves the MRF
holding a press conference in the first week of November in one of the
office buildings of the United States House of Representatives in
Washington, DC.  The press conference will feature a prominent member of
Congress.  Expect another Call to Action encouraging our members, our SMRO
partners, motorcyclists in general and other concerned citizens to attend.
At that time we will be issuing a formal letter to the Chairman of the
NTSB asking him to reconsider their proposed lobbying of the states and
asking that he consider the statistical facts related to our Motorcycle
Safety Action Plan and its effectiveness with regard to Crash Avoidance
and NOT Safer Crashing as the goal.

For strategic reasons, third phase of our initiative will be announced
once we complete the necessary research and sufficient discussions have
taken place.  We will go on record, however, as stating that we will not
rule out asking Congress to take action against the NTSB, as we have done
with NHTSA in the past, should they continue to ignore the spirit of
previous congressional mandates against federal agencies lobbying states
on mandatory helmet laws.

Please contact Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations of the
Motorcycle Riders Foundation, at 202-546-0983 in our Washington D.C.
Office to schedule your appointments.
